The Gospel of John was written by John, the apostle, the son of Zebedee. He, along with his older brother James, was a fisherman. Peter, Andrew, James, and John, lived in a small fishing village on the Sea of Galilee. Oh, how things must have changed drastically that day when those four left their nets to follow Jesus.
Some say the first 18 verses of John’s gospel were a song sung in the early church. The life and miracles of Jesus in John’s gospel reveal the theology of this song. The words that John wrote were poetic in nature. The harmony of what he said flows from one chapter to the next, forming one long melody. From the stories of creation, to the miracles John saw with his own eyes, to witnessing the transfiguration, to watching the Savior of the world die upon a wooden cross, to sitting on a sandy seashore eating with the resurrected Savior, John could not help but write this love song.
John wrote like a man from another world. His revelation is shocking and personal. Hardly the words of a fisherman! He recorded the things he heard and saw that have changed the world for generations. This was John’s song. And herein lies another fisherman’s song, written by one who, even nearly 2000 years later, is still beholding His glory, singing the same song of redemption and living between two worlds.
